BOM AI Manual

Install on Linux

Install BOM AI on Ubuntu or Debian with the verified install script — the chat opens at port 8080.

Install BOM AI on Linux

This manual is for BOM AI v0.3.1-r2.

Testing status: the Linux package declares support for Ubuntu 22.04+ and Debian 12+ (both x64 and arm64), but it has not yet completed full clean-machine testing. If something goes wrong, please report your distro and the exact message you see on the FAQ page.

Requirements

Item Requirement
Operating system Ubuntu 22.04+ or Debian 12+ (x64 or arm64)
Python 3.11 or 3.12
RAM 8 GB minimum / 16 GB recommended
Internet required for the first download

Check your machine first (read-only commands):

cat /etc/os-release
uname -m
free -h
df -h "$HOME"

1. Download the script and verify the hash

Download install-bom-ai-linux.sh from the BOM AI download page and verify it before running:

  • File size: 13,218 bytes
  • SHA-256: 805438bbc7ea6de24fa0e3f4a7b88a005e3766458a7554c0ec7b2abcb5e84013
sha256sum install-bom-ai-linux.sh

2. Run the installer

bash install-bom-ai-linux.sh
  • The script installs under $HOME/BOM-AI, in your current user's home folder.
  • Some steps may need elevated privileges, for example installing system dependencies — read each prompt before confirming.
  • The script prepares the Python environment (venv) and installs the Open WebUI 0.12.5 chat page.

Wait for the model download to finish and do not run two installer windows at once.

3. Open your first chat

Open http://127.0.0.1:8080 in your browser.

On first launch, create the local account exactly as shown on screen — it belongs to the chat page on your machine only, not to any BOM AI subscription.

On Linux, web search is off by default. Normal chatting works without it.

Type "Summarize how to get started with BOM AI in 3 points" and send. Reload the page afterwards and reopen the same conversation to check the history.

Ready → continue to Usage & Model Selection.

Check the status

Check that the chat page responds:

curl -I --max-time 10 http://127.0.0.1:8080/

An HTTP reply does not prove the model answers — also send a question in the chat page. For any service the script created, check it by its real name as shown on your machine (do not assume a service name in advance):

systemctl list-unit-files 'bomai*'
systemctl status SERVICE_NAME --no-pager
journalctl -u SERVICE_NAME -n 30 --no-pager

Having problems?

Start with the FAQ launch fixes, keeping your distro name, script version, and the exact message shown.

Before updating or uninstalling, back up the conversations you want to keep and follow the instructions shipped with that version of the script. Do not delete the data folder instead of uninstalling — you would lose both the conversations and the downloaded model.
